Glasnost was in the air as the Soviet Union imploded, hopefully toward democracy and as Gorbachev desired, a Scandinavian style social democracy but which the ruthless, here and there, decided needed to be psychopathic capitalism. But Glasnost, or openness, was the Soviets trying to look at their history with a real analysis, without propaganda... many still wished for the certainty of "Uncle Joe" and once the capitalists got control much suffering resulted in order that billionaires might emerge & flourish. I thought we needed a look at our own history with openness & so wrote this song.... upon which Willeye & I improvised.

in goes on like that, listing the undemocratic meddling the U.S. undertook over the 20th century... in the name of freedom & democracy, we were told.
